## Overview

WindTerm is an SSH, Telnet, raw TCP, serial and local shell client for Windows, macOS and Linux. It is aimed at DevOps work and puts a terminal, session management, file transfer and port forwarding in one window, so it suits people who spend most of their terminal time on remote machines. The application is free for commercial and non-commercial use, but it is only partly open source: the GitHub repository publishes some components (a modified libssh, Onigmo, a pty layer based on ptyqt, a Telnet implementation and a few widgets) under Apache-2.0, while the program itself ships as binaries.

SSH support covers ControlMaster, ProxyCommand and ProxyJump, agent and agent forwarding, X11 forwarding, local, remote and dynamic port forwarding, and login by password, public key, keyboard-interactive or GSSAPI. HTTP, SOCKS5 and jump-server proxies can be set per session. An integrated SFTP/SCP client and a local file manager sit next to the terminal, and XModem, YModem and ZModem transfers are supported. Local sessions run `cmd`, PowerShell, bash, zsh and other shells, and tmux integration was added in 2025.

The interface has a session tree, colored and searchable tabs, split views, an explorer pane, a command palette, a command sender, sync input across sessions, auto-completion and a lock screen. Session usernames and passwords are protected with a master password. Sessions can be logged manually or automatically, and the last sessions and layout are restored on restart. Output can be timestamped, folded and outlined, and Shift+Enter switches between remote mode and a local mode with vim keybindings.

The terminal emulates VT100 through VT520 and xterm with 256 colors, true color, mouse reporting and Unicode 13, and the README states that every vttest test passes except Tektronix 4014. GPU rendering, font ligatures and inline image protocols are not documented. The latest release, 2.7.0, came out in March 2025, and the published source has not changed since 2021, although the issue tracker is still active.
