magic-wormhole
Python library and `wormhole` CLI for sending files, directories, or text between computers using short, single-use, human-pronounceable codes.
Magic Wormhole is a Python library and a command-line tool named wormhole for transferring files, directories, or short pieces of text from one computer to another. Files and directories can be of arbitrary size. It falls into the network file transfer category.
The two endpoints are paired by a shared "wormhole code". Normally the sending machine generates and displays the code, and the user types it into the receiving machine. Codes are short and human-pronounceable, built from a phonetically-distinct wordlist. The receiving side offers tab-completion on the codewords, so usually only a few characters need to be typed. Codes are single-use and do not need to be memorized.
The program relies on two servers whose source is kept in separate repositories: a mailbox server and a transit relay. The project is released under the MIT license and is compatible with Python 3.10 and higher (tested up to 3.12). Packages are available in many operating systems. It suits developers, sysadmins, and anyone who needs to move data between two machines without setting up accounts, SSH access, or shared storage.
