Newsboat
RSS/Atom feed reader for the text terminal, with a built-in HTML renderer, filters, query feeds, macros, and newsreading service sync.
Newsboat is an RSS/Atom feed reader that runs in the text console. It is an actively maintained fork of Newsbeuter. It pulls updates from blogs and news sites and presents them in a single terminal interface. A built-in HTML renderer displays text-only entries, so a web browser is not needed to read them.
Articles can be handled in several ways. Killfiles filter out articles by title, author, contents and similar fields. Query feeds aggregate articles into meta-feeds using arbitrary criteria. Scripts and filters (Snownews extensions) transform feeds before Newsboat ingests them. Bookmarking scripts send links or whole articles to third-party services. Macros run a sequence of actions with two keystrokes, and there is rudimentary podcast support.
Newsboat can also act as a client for newsreading services such as The Old Reader, NewsBlur and FeedHQ, among others. It is aimed at terminal users who want a keyboard-driven feed reader. It is built from source with GNU Make, a C++17 compiler, Rust/Cargo, STFL, SQLite3, libcurl, libxml2 and json-c. The Snap package supports only xdg-open as the browser and cannot run arbitrary scripts for rendering or bookmarking, because of strict confinement.
