beets

Command-line music library manager that catalogs collections and autocorrects tags using MusicBrainz, Discogs, and Beatport, extensible through Python plugins.

install· pip

beets is a music library management system driven from the command line via the beet command. It catalogs a music collection and improves the metadata of the files as it imports them. For example, beet import ~/music/ladytron matches the album against a metadata source, reports a similarity percentage, and shows the proposed track title corrections before applying them.

Most functionality is provided by plugins. Documented plugins fetch or calculate album art, lyrics, genres, tempos, ReplayGain levels, and acoustic fingerprints. Metadata can come from MusicBrainz, Discogs, and Beatport, or be guessed from filenames or acoustic fingerprints. Other plugins transcode audio to other formats, find duplicate tracks and albums, report albums with missing tracks, clean up stray tags left by other tools, and embed or extract album art.

Beets also provides ways to browse and play the library: a web interface that plays audio in any browser supporting HTML5 Audio, and support for music players that speak the MPD protocol. Metadata can also be analyzed from the command line. Because it is built as a library, users who know some Python can write their own plugins. It suits people with large local music collections who want consistent tagging and organization.
